CHIMBORAZO DESCRIPTION

Chimborazo and the Volcanoes of Ecuador

August 17—27, 2008

Ecuador is one of the finest mountaineering destinations on Earth.

On its “AVENUE OF THE VOLCANOES”, as famous German explorer Alexander Von Humboldt named it, dozens of high volcanoes are strung out in a line within easy driving distance from the capital, Quito.

On this 10-day climbing expedition during Ecuador’s dry season, Chimborazo will be our main objective. Not only is it the highest peak in the country at 20,664’, and a reasonable climbing challenge at that, but by one measure it’s the world’s highest peak, being the point farthest from the center of the Earth. Everything we do will be aimed at reaching its summit. First we’ll climb on two extinct volcanoes near Quito- Pichincha and Pasachoa- which will give us good initial acclimatization. Then we’ll climb Illiniza Norte, a dramatic peak on the way south towards Chimborazo, which is a stiff scramble to a remarkable summit and extraordinary views.

We’ll practice the use of ice-ax, crampons, roped travel, and othermountaineering techniques on the glaciers of Chimborazo before our summit attempts. Then we’ll put them to use on Chimborazo, which will give us a great test with it’s high icefields, unpredictable weather, and great height.

All climbs will be guided by Skip Horner, with the able assistance of Jose Velez, a well-known Ecuadorian climber and guide. They will give you your best opportunity to summit these magnificent mountains. Previous mountaineering experience is valuable, but not mandatory.

We’ll stay in fine lodges for the nights off the mountain. Café Cultura Hotel in Quito, for example, was described by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the finest in the country. When we arrive at Chimborazo we’ll set up a basecamp, then a high camp, but mules will carry the heavy loads for us. Our well-trained staff will make camp quite comfortable. All in all this will be an exceptional experience as we ascend one of most important peaks in the Andes, and the world.
