KILIMANJARO: ITINERARY August 1 Depart USA. August 2 Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), Tanzania, in the evening. Your guide and driver will meet you, and transfer to the Hatari Lodge for 2 nights in Arusha National Park. www.hatarilodge.com August 3 Full day game-viewing drive and walk through Arusha National Park, a hidden gem famous for its resident herds of buffalo, giraffes and many other game animals. Overnight at Hatari Lodge, with great views of Kilimanjaro. Make preparations for our ascent. August 4 Drive four hours to our Kilimanjaro trailhead and meet our porters and guides. Hike 3-4 hours through the dense forest and tall heather to Sekimba Camp at 8,500’. August 5 Hike 6 hours up through the heather to camp next to the creek at Kikelewa Cave, at 11,000’. August 6 Hike 4 hours over volcanic ridges and past impressive lava-tubes to camp at Mawenzi Tarn at 13,500’. August 7 Layover day for acclimatization at Mawenzi Tarn. Hike up onto the rocky slopes of Mt. Mawenzi. August 8 Hike 5-6 hours across the Saddle to the School Hut at 15,200’. Kilimanjaro looms in the foreground. August 9 Starting for the summit at midnight we hope to top out at Uhuru Point, 19,340’, soon after dawn. Descend to the Kibo Hut, 15,300’, for lunch, then on to Horombo Camp at 12,200’, arriving late in the afternoon. August 10 Descend 5 hours along the Marangu Route to the park gate, and drive 3 hours to Arusha. Overnight at the Mountain Village Serena Lodge. www.serenahotels.com August 11 Drive 5 hours into the African bush to Ngorongoro Crater National Park, a World Heritage Site. Overnight at the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge, a spectacular setting on the rim of the crater. August 12 Full day 4x4 excursion into the crater. This is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth. The crater is 12 miles in diameter, 2000’ deep, and home to teeming concentrations of wildlife. Ngorongoro Serena Lodge. August 13 Drive 3 hours to Lake Manyara National Park, at the foot of the Great Rift escarpment, and famous for its elephants and for its tree-climbing lions. Overnight at the Lake Manyara Serena Lodge. August 14 Drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for its wild bush habitat. This is the best season to visit Tarangire, with all the migratory wildlife concentrated along the river. Overnight at the Tarangire Safari Lodge.(www.tarangiresafarilodge.com) August 15 Early morning game drive through Tarangire Park. After lunch at the lodge, drive back to Arusha and transfer Kilimanjaro International Airport for flights home. August 16 Arrive home. |
