MOROCCO ITINERARY

April 15 Arrive Marrakech. You’ll be met on arrival and transferred to the Hotel Riad (www.riadomar.com). Remainder of the day at your leisure to explore this historic city.

April 16 Full day tour of Marrakech, including: the Djemaa el-Fna, the main square and open-air theatre; the Musee de Marrakech; the Saadian Tombs; the Mouassine Fountain; and more. Overnight at the Hotel Riad.

April 17 Morning departure for the Moulay Brahim Gorges to Imlil, set in the upper level foothills of the High Atlas mountains at 5700’. Here we’ll spend the night at the Iminouassif Guesthouse.

April 18 Starting our trek to the base of Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in Northern Africa, we’ll head up the Mizane Valley past the village of Aremd, then on to the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. The trail climbs steadily through rocky cliffs and high hillsides toToubkal Refuge, at 10,500’.

April 19 Starting well before dawn, we’ll hike to the top of the mountain. The route is long but straightforward as vistas open up in every direction. From the summit we’ll see all the way from the High Atlas and the Marrakech Plains in the north to the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara to the south. It’s the biggest view in North Africa. Return to Toubkal Refuge for the night.

April 20 Following a different route we’ll return to Imlil for another night at Iminouassif Guesthouse.

April 21 After breakfast we’ll drive out over the High Atlas, crossing the Tizi-n-Tast Pass on our way to the Berber villages sprinkled along the edge of the desert in riverside oases and barren hillsides. Arriving in the Dades Valley we’ll check into the Hotel Kasbah de la Vallee before heading our for a hike into the surrounding landscape.

April 22 Drive out to the Todra Gorge, a massive fault dividing the High Atlas, Rising 1000’ in a narrow valley with palmeries and villages. Before lunch we’ll hike through a date-palm plantation. Later we’ll drive on beyond Erg Chebbi to start our camel trek into the Sahara. Overnight at a Berber encampment in the dunes where we’ll enjoy a truly authentic traditional Moroccan dinner.

April 23 After mint tea and breakfast, return to Erg Chebbi on camelback. Then drive along the Ziz Valley Gorge to Azrou, famous for its cedar forests and Barbary Apes. Overnight at Hotel Panarama.

April 24 A free day in unhurried Azrou to hike into the cedar forests with waterfalls, fields full of Spring wildflowers and to enjoy this important crossroads . Hotel Panarama.

April 25 After a short drive to Fes we’ll check into Hotel Perla, then go out for a full tour of this remarkable town. We’ll wander the twisting alleys, blind turns and hidden souqs of Fes el-Bali, the ancient medina unchanged for a millennia, which also features the largest mosque in Africa. April 26 After breakfast drive to Volubilis to visit the well-preserved Roman ruins with their lovely mosaics that date from the 3rd century BC. Continue on to the ancient city of Meknes, the most laid-back of the imperial cities. Overnight at the Hotel Akouas (www.hotelakouas.com)

April 27 Drive to Rabat, famous for its stunning colonial architecture, palm-lined boulevards. We’ll visit the Kasbah with its dramatic gate, and the landmark of Hassan Tower. Later transfer to the airport for flights home.
