TANZANIA ITINERARY

Feb 15 Leave the USA, en route to Kilimanjaro International Airport. (JRO).

Feb 16 Arrive JRO. We’ll be met on arrival by our driver/guides and taken to the Serena Mountain Village Lodge, nestled into the depths of a tree-shaded coffee plantation, on the shores of Lake Diluti, near Arusha, Tanzania.

Feb 17 After breakfast, transfer to Arusha airport for our scheduled flight to Serengeti National Park. There we’ll be met by our driver/guides and immediately set out on our first game drive. Lunch and overnight at Mapito Tented Camp. Mapito is a small very personal camp with great service, running hot-water bucket showers, and solar power. Situated on the edge of the park, we’ll be able to take walking safaris and night game drives.

Feb 18 A full day in the Serengeti in our 4x4’s, our first full day of wildlife viewing. Mapito Tented Camp.

Feb 19 After an early breakfast, we’ll take a game drive through the park, arriving at Ndutu for lunch and overnight at the Lake Masek Tented Camp. This is another small private camp with full bush amenities. The wildebeest migration is in residence in this area during this time of year.

Feb 20 A full day for game drives in the Ndutu area of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Lake Masek Tented Camp.

Feb 21 After a leisurely breakfast we’ll drive into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, stopping en route at the famous archeological site of Olduvai Gorge. At the end of the day we’ll arrive at the gracious Ngorongoro Serena Lodge, perched on the brink of Ngorongoro Crater. Feb 22 After an early breakfast we’ll drive down into Ngorongoro Crater for a full day game drive. This enormous 20-mile-wide crater is the permanent home for a vast array of wildlife, including prides of lions, herds of elephants and antelopes, huge flocks of flamingos, and myriad other species. Ngorongoro Serena Lodge.

Feb 23 After a casual breakfast we’ll drive to Lake Manyara Serena for lunch. This spectacular lodge is set on the edge of the Great Rift Escarpment, and its ‘infinite pool’ seems to drip right over the edge of the cliff. Afternoon at leisure in this remarkable location.

Feb 24 Leaving early, we’ll descend the Great Rift and drive into Lake Manyara National Park, taking a picnic lunch so we can enjoy the entire day inside the park. Lake Manyara is the only dependable water for the entire region, thus is supports impressive herds of all the famous wildlife. The tree-climbing lions here are legendary. Return to Lake Manyara Serena Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Feb 25 After a relaxed breakfast, we’ll drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for its huge herds of elephants, and check into the Tarangire Safari Lodge. Each tented room overlooks the Tarangire River valley where wildlife comes and goes for its daily water. Tarangire is a vast rolling grasslands, a romantic sweep of African bush that remains as wild as it was hundreds of years ago. We’ll take a late afternoon sunset game drive into the park.

Feb 26 A full day for game drives in Tarangire National Park. We can decide whether to go off on a full day drive deep into the park, taking a picnic lunch, or to take one or two shorter drives, morning and afternoon, returning to the lodge for lunch.

Feb 27 After an early morning game drive we’ll return to the lodge for lunch, then pack up and drive to Kilimanjaro International Airport for our evening flights home.

Feb 28 Arrive home.
