WAKHAN ITINERARY

August 13 Arrive Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Transfer to the Taj Palace Hotel. Afternoon tour of the city.

August 14 Fly to Khorog, along the Aru Darya River. Overnight in the Serena Hotel.

August 15 Drive 3 hours to the border crossing into Afghanistan at the village of Ishkashim. Overnight at the ……….Hotel.

August 16 Drive 9 hours in 4x4’s through the Wakhan Corridor, passing Wakhi villages and seeing traditional life. Break for lunch at Qala-e-Panja, and walk to the ruins of the riverside fort of the last Mir (King) of Wakhan. Also visit the last King of Afghanistan’s former hunting lodge. Continue to Sarhad-e-Brogil for camp, where we’ll meet our camp crew and our pack animals.

August 17 Trek 6 hours out of Sarhad, reaching camp beneath Uween-e-Ben Pass.

August 18 Cross Uween Pass and skirt around picturesque freshwater lakes. After 6 hours camp at a Wakhi grazing settlement and visit a vast amount of petroglyphs in the place called Baj Qeer.

August 19 Trek 7 hours over 13,000’ Kotal-e-Qarabel Pass and down into the Barnoz Valley, a beautiful alpine meadow at 11,000’ that is a Wakhi summer grazing settlement of five families.

August 20 Trek 7 hours over another 13,000’ pass and enter another lovely alpine valley at the foot of Aqbelis Pass. Camp at Aqbelis Ben.

August 21 Trek 7 hours over 14,000’ Aqbelis Pass, the border between Wakhi and Kyrgiz settlements. Pass by two alpine lakes surrounded by peaks. Camp at Bozoi Gumbaz.

August 22 Bozoi Gumbaz layover day. Today we can visit the Kyrgyz settlement, or walk to the shores of Lake Chakhmaktin Lake, or climb one of the neaby peaks. There are also the remains of an old Soviet military camp to explore.

August 23 Following the Wakhan River downstream, we walk along the old Silk Road. This area is excellent for wildlife spotting. After 6 hours camp in the Green pastures beside the stream at Langar.

August 24 Continue along the Silk Road. Great scenery and wildlife spotting. Camp in a dramatic setting at Barak. Hearty souls can bathe in the river here.

August 25 A final day along the Silk Road. After 5 hours we arrive back at Sarhad for camp, where we can enjoy the local hot springs.

August 26 Drive back to Qala Panja for camp.

August 27 Drive back to Ishkashim and cross the border into Tajikistan. Drive to Khorog and spend the night at the Serena Hotel.

August 28 Fly back to Dushanbe. Overnight at the Taj Palace Hotel.

August 29 & 30 Extra days in case of delays.

August 31 Fly home.
