WAKHAN CORRIDOR SECURITY

The following was written by our local agent in Ishkashim, at the base of the Wakhan Corridor in Afghanistan. He's an Australian who has worked in Afghanistan for many years and knows its people and their intricacies very well.

"Foreign organisations have been operating in this landscape for over 10 years without security attachments and without having had any incidents. Tourist numbers to the landscape is increasing by the year, currently totally somewhere in the vicinity of 250 people/yr. Visitors almost always comment on the welcoming locals and the safety. The communities in Wakhan have never been involved with Afghanistan's conflict. They remained non-violent even when the landscape was occupied by the Soviet military for 7 years. Personally speaking, they're probably the most welcoming and caring people I've ever met. Coming into Wakhan via Ishkashim means that you avoid any of Afghanistan's insecurity areas."
